Grants and Loan Programs

USDA Grants and Loans

All agricultural producers, including farmers and ranchers, who gain 50% or more of their gross income from agricultural operations are eligible for these grants and loans. Most small businesses also qualify.

Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) Grants
These grants are available to help agriculture producers and small businesses reduce energy costs through the installation of renewable energy systems.

The grants cover up to 25% of eligible project. Eligible project cost can be up to $500,000.

Applying for a REAP grant is a complex process, which is why we will apply for the grant and loan for you!

In 2010, Soveren helped Lisa G Nash, DC and Vermont Shepherd Farm both in Westminster West, VT apply for and successfully receive REAP grants.

In 2011, Soveren helped six local businesses and farms apply for and receive REAP grants:

  • West Hill Shop (Putney)
  • Vermont Homestead (Putney)
  • Vernmont Farm (Vernon)
  • Foxchair Mountain Craftsmen (Springfield)
  • High Meadow Farm (Westminster West)
  • and Sweet Tree Farm (Dummerston).

All of these farms and businesses no longer pay an electricity bill, they are protected against future electricity price increases and they are helping relieve their dependence on fossil fuels.

And Soveren helped bring $236,720 in USDA grant money into the local economy!

REAP Feasibility Grants
These grants cover energy audits and feasibility studies for renewable energy systems and can be as much as $50,000 or 25% of the total cost.

REAP Loans
Loans range from $5,000 up to $25 million or 75% of the total project cost.
